Police shot a man in a pickup truck that carried two small children Wednesday after he backed into the car of an officer who had pulled him over.

The unidentified man, in his 30s, was driving a light-brown pickup truck about 1:15 p.m. when three officers in separate cars stopped him at Southwest 138th Avenue and 38th Street, said Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Lena Jean-Baptiste. One of the cars was unmarked. The stop was a part of an investigation that police would not discuss.

The man then reversed into a police car, Jean-Baptiste said. One officer shot the man through the windows of his truck, wounding him in the upper body.

Despite his gunshot wound, the pickup’s driver sped away on 38th Street. Police chased him for about five blocks until he reached a dead end, said police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta. The man was in stable condition Tuesday night at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Also in the truck were a 2-year-old girl and a baby boy. The man’s relationship to the children was not clear. Police took the boy to Kendall Regional Medical Center as a precaution. The 2-year-old girl was sent to her mother.
